March 31, Fiordland, Queenstown and Glenorchy

Drive to Glenorchy. Weather gets worse and late afternoon comes with buckets of rain. We stop in Queenstown to stock up on groceries again and try to locate a place with internet access. It comes almost with no surprise that all the outlets in the café with free wi-fi are blocked. Why would you need to plug in? With all of our electronics hungry for a charge we accomplish absolutely nothing and the plan to look up ticket prices to Indonesia and back to Chicago is put off for another occassion. End of a trip remains a big question mark, which is just fine.

We spend the night on the other shore of Lake Wainaiki, across picture perfect Glenorchy, at the end of the road in Kinloch and a few kilometers from the Routeburn trailhead. Not sure if the hike will even be possible at all as whether does not look promising. Because it’s raining frogs, we unfold a kitchen in the car and wolf down dinner on the front seat - whole grain sandwiches with cheddar, salami, tomatoes and Cajun - our new staple - finishing off with unsweetened coffee and vegetables in a capsule. ElCheapo has pretty much become our cocoon on wheels.

At sunset the clouds rise and the sky clears, a glimpse of hope for tomorrow.
