March 18 - 19, Auckland, New Zealand

Feels slightly strange to be submerged in western culture again, and we’re momentarily nostalgic for all the street commotion that flavors Asian towns and cities.
We landed in Auckland yesterday afternoon and are getting out of town as soon as we rent a car. Between taking regular buses and hop-on-hop-off tourist buses, and outside hitchhiking, having your own set of wheels turns out to be the most budget option for two people. The vehicle of our choice - grand ElCheapo - we have yet to take glamorous pictures of.

For the first time in over ten years we share a dorm with six other people for the night. For $25 per person. Ridiculous, but it’s just for one night and it has to do. In one day we end up spending a weekly budget we grew accustomed to over the past three months. It‘s definitely time to break any delusions about staying here on a budget, even US backpacker’s budget. On the other hand, eating out looks promising - food portions are huge, big enough to be shared by a family of four, or at least two hungry backpackers. Still, we need to do a serious mental and financial adjustment.

Not to be overly dramatic, we have no right to be, but this precisely sums up our current state of mind - overwhelmed, claustrophobic and blue.
