March 29, Milford Sound, Fiordland

Breaking news - MSR works great! With the right valve ;) We can cook for an army and boil buckets of hot water for makeshift-improvised-camelback showers.

Scenic route to Milford Sound goes through some spectacular mountain scenery. It’s a windy, late afternoon when we reach the famous fiord, sun already starting to set. Painting a pretty surreal sight, the light shines directly in our face and mist shrouds the mountains, silhouetting the edges.

Milford Sound

Charging our batteries in the only cafĂ© in town, we inquire others who’ve done the world famous Milford Track. Apparently you never get above the tree line and the only thing you see over four days of trekking is dense foliage and waterfalls, the best part being Milford Sound emerging at the very end of the trail. Does it sound like it’s worth $300 per person, including transportation? Maybe for the elite 14,000 people who finish the tack each year. Not us.

We pull over for a second on our way back from Milford - and lock ourselves out with the car still running. How is that even possible? Thankfully, before Sebastian charges the window with a rock, we notice one window was left slightly down, just enough to push a branch inside an roll it down. Huge relief.

Morning at Crawford Creek campsite
  Staying semi-clean, definite priority
