We wake up to frost covered ground and drive to Mt Cook, searching for a place that holds a promise of hot shower and internet access along the way. After several failed attempts, including Glenntanner campsite with many available sites but ridiculous 2pm check-in rule, and covering 300km by noon, we reach Aoraki/Mt Cook village and finally get a chance to take a hot shower - this time in a backcountry DOC Public Shelter. It’s the first one we’ve encountered in over 3000km driven since Auckland.
Taking advantage of a sunny afternoon we take a short hike to Mt Aoraki viewpoint.
