March 30, Routeburn track part 1, Key Summit and Lake Marion

In good weather with clear skies the 4h return track to Key Summit, 991m, is a sample of what the Routeburn Track has to offer from the Divide end, near Milford. It climbs steadily through a rainforest and gets above the tree line within 1.5h, offering views of the Hollyford Valley and Eglinton and Greenstone River Valleys.

low on fiber? no worries mate!
From the summit the panorama takes in snowcapped peaks and Lake Marion reflecting in the marshes and small lakes dotting flat plains at the ridge.

For the night we embrace Deer Flat campsite again, as lacking in services as could be in such a prime location, practically in Milford’s shadow, but sand flies are not as persistent here, making it as desirable as a hot shower after a day's hike.
